Mary Lou Brunell, MSN, RN
Executive Director, Florida Center for Nursing, Co-Lead, Florida Action Coalition
Mary Lou Brunell is the chief executive officer of the Florida Center for Nursing with responsibility for administering its goals as set forth in Chapter 464.0195 F.S.  Appointed by the Board of Directors, Brunell carries out the fiscal, personnel, planning, convening and other functions necessary to meet the goals of the Center and to provide for its effective and efficient operation.  In partnership with the Florida Blue Foundation, Brunell co-leads the Florida Action Coalition in their effort to assure that all Floridians have access to high quality, patient-centered care. The framework for action is based on the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine’s landmark report: The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.  In 2011 Brunell founded the Florida Healthcare Simulation Alliance with support of Florida Blue Foundation.

As a researcher, Brunell has been awarded $5.7 million in grant funding since 2000.  This includes being part of a U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration H-1B Technical Skills Training Grant and receiving two Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing: State Implementation Program Grants.  Prior to her work with the Center, Brunell coordinated the RN to BSN Program offered by the University of Central Florida on the Orlando Health downtown campus.  Her teaching assignments included leadership, economics, and health policy.  Brunell’s areas of practice were critical care and nursing administration serving as vice president of patient services in Lexington, Kentucky.  

Brunell is a member of the Florida Board of Governor’s Health Initiatives Committee Advisory Group.  She served as a member of the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, as chair of the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers, and was interim chair of the Workforce Florida Board of Directors (now known as CareerSource Florida).  Brunell completed her graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and is the recipient of honors including the Louise Mellen Fellowship in Critical Care Nursing and being inducted into the Florida Nurses Association Hall of Fame. 

Prakash Patel, M.D. 
Chief Operating Officer, GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation and President of GuideWell Health 

Prakash Patel is GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation’s chief operating officer (COO) and president of GuideWell Health, the health services organization in the GuideWell family of companies. 
In his role as COO, Patel has primary accountability for providing leadership for and leveraging synergies among Delivery System, Medical Operations, Analytics and the Service Organization, the functional areas among the most critical in creating an exceptional experience for our customers and providers. In his role as president of GuideWell Health, he drives collaboration throughout the enterprise to further position GuideWell Health as the future of health care delivery in Florida and elsewhere. 

Prior to his current role, Patel served as CEO of Access MediQuip, the nation's first and largest provider of outsourced surgical and implantable medical device management solutions. Prior to joining Access MediQuip, he worked at Magellan Health Services, where he served on the executive leadership team as chief corporate development officer. He had previously served as senior vice president of operations at Magellan's National Imaging Associates (NIA), where his responsibilities included operational oversight, analysis and implementation across companywide functions such as network, medical management, cost of care and analytics. 

Earlier in his career he held leadership roles with investment and advisory firms spanning health care, biotechnology, IT and pharmaceuticals. Patel holds a bachelor's degree in anthropology and zoology from the University of Michigan and a doctor of medicine degree from Cornell University Medical College.
